Kirshner Family Weekend Recap

By Pamela Nestor

Kirshner Family Weekend is one of our favorite weekends of the summer. It is so exciting to have families from all over the country, many of which are alumni, reliving camp memories and sharing their favorite place with their own family and friends. Families began arriving Friday, just in time for activities before Shabbat dinner. They went swimming, played basketball, soccer, volleyball, or tennis, shot bows at archery, tie-dyed shirts, or all of the above!

Later that evening, everyone assembled in the dining hall for Shabbat dinner. Families were joined by our international staff, who arrived on Thursday, for their very first Shabbat dinner at camp. After that, we had family sports night on the upper ball fields! At sunset, everyone gathered around the fire pit to roast marshmallows and eat smores.

We got off to an early start on Saturday. The weather was perfect and families spent the morning tubing and zip lining, bounding off the blob, tie-dying shirts, horseback riding, and shooting bows at archery. After lunch we had a tour and informational session for those families considering sending their child to EKC either this summer or next summer. After that the activities continued.

Dinner was a cookout in the pavilion, followed by our annual Family Weekend Pool Party and famous cannonball contest! However, the highlight of the weekend was yet to come. After the pool everyone was ushered back to the pavilion for The Great Dubois Circus Show, where performers Michael Dubois and Viktoria Grimmy captivated our attention. Michael opened the show with impressive juggling tricks, at one point having seven balls in the air at once. Viktoria, a 5th generation circus performer, showed off her flexibility and balance, tossing hoops in the air and doing stunts.

On Sunday, families went ziplining, rock wall climbing, and swimming, spent more time by the lake tubing, finished tie-dyeing their shirts, and enjoyed more athletics in the ballfields. Families were eager to spend as much time in camp as they could.

Families choose to spend the weekend with us a for any number of reasons. Some are alumni wanting to share these experiences with their families, others are first-time campers wanting to get a feel for camp. Whatever their motivation for coming, families came together and enjoyed a fun-filled, nostalgic, exciting weekend, and we were so happy to be able to share the magic of camp with them!
