Maccabi Color War Theme – Session 1!

By Rachael Speck

For over a decade, Emma Kaufmann Camp has had the luxury of having a 5-star chef create and serve three delightful meals every day. Kim is our head chef extraordinaire. We have been so unbelievably lucky to have her all to ourselves, but now it’s time to share her culinary talent with the world. Kim needs to spread those wings and FLY! Choosing a location for her newest restaurant will not be easy. She has received invitations to open her new restaurant in 107 cities, spanning 6 continents. EKC’s leadership has narrowed down the choices to the four most promising candidates.

Paris, Bonjour de la capitale de la France! From escargot to crepes, Paris has been a foodie destination for hundreds of years. Known for being the classic culinary capital of the world, many chefs are trained using the French techniques taught in Paris. A dinner of duck confit with a side of frites and an eclair for dessert is a meal made in heaven. Tourists may visit Paris to see the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre Museum, and the Arc de Triomphe, but the food is what keeps their mouths watering and brings them back! With baguettes, croissants, and macarons, what more could anybody need? Paris has over 9,000 restaurants ranging from sweet to savory and everything in between! They’re only missing one thing, and that one thing is Kim. Kim has both the flair and finesse necessary to become one of the top chefs in all of Paris. Bon appetit!

Tokyo, Konnichiwa! Boasting a vibrant and cosmopolitan food scene, Tokyo has become a must visit food mecca. Tokyo is the food capital of the world with more Michelin starred restaurants than any other city. Tokyo sets the global standard for sushi. These tasty rolls of seaweed, rice, and raw fish have flooded social media, become a dinner staple all around the world, and can even be found at your local gas station. Ramen and tempura restaurants line the streets of Tokyo and fill the stomachs of its patrons. Famous for udon and soba noodles, there are endless possibilities for a scrumptious meal in Tokyo. Tokyo’s chefs are known to be cutting edge and fearless, just like Kim.

Tel Aviv, Shalom from the Nonstop City! Israel’s largest metropolitan area is famous for falafel, shakshuka, schnitzel, and all the Israeli delicacies we know and love. That is not all Tel Aviv has to offer. You can find fresh vegetables passing through Shook Ha’Carmel everyday. The locally grown tomatoes, cucumbers, and onions are what give Israeli Salad its fresh taste, and make it the perfect side for every meal. Tel Aviv is also a top dessert destination; rugelach, Halvah, and chocolate balls are certain to satisfy your sweet tooth. Every corner of Tel Aviv has a local pita, hummus, and shawarma stand ready for any food connoisseur coming its way. Kim has excelled in kosher cuisine over the past decade, so this could make Tel Aviv the perfect destination for her new restaurant.

New Orleans, Who Dat! Commonly known as Nola, New Orleans is world-famous for its food scene. The cuisine is as unique and flavorful as the city itself. New Orleans food combines Creole, Cajun, and French cuisines into a style that is all its own. Gumbo has become one of the city’s most famous dishes and is served in almost every restaurant. Beignets, po’boys, and jambalayas are just a few more staples of the
extensive its food scene. It’s impossible to visit New Orleans and not experience the fresh seafood. Finding tastier oysters, crayfish, and alligator is nearly impossible.  Don’t worry, there are plenty of kosher alternatives too! Mardi Gras, New Orleans’ biggest party, hardly compares to the intensity of a cooks’ parade, so Kim is more than ready. The Big Easy has strong food traditions and a style only
they can claim; however, Kim has never turned down a challenge and is ready to act.

All four of these cities would be fantastic locations for Kim to open her new restaurant. Grilled cheese, spaghetti and meatballs, and cookouts are now in Kim’s past…… Tel Aviv, Paris, New Orleans, or Tokyo are in her future. Such a decision cannot be taken lightly, and none of EKC’s leaders feel comfortable making this decision on their own. There is only one way to make a decision this important.
EKC must turn to its campers and staff to come together for camp’s most time-honored tradition……
