Our First Saturday at Camp!

By Rachael Speck

Saturdays at camp are a great opportunity to spend time with siblings, family and friends since we spend most of the day doing activities together as an entire camp. We got a little extra rest this morning after a rockin’ song session last night. The gorgeous weather made for an ideal Shabbat morning setting in the amphitheater.   After a late wake up and lazy breakfast, we started off with Shabbat morning programming. During our staff training week, each unit worked together to choose the Jewish values that they would infuse in their unit throughout the summer. Part of that planning included Shabbat morning programs that would allow campers to learn, connect and live those values. After our programs we had services in the amphitheater and then headed off to lunch for cold cut sandwiches, pasta salad, chips and fresh fruit.

We spent the afternoon on the upper ball fields having all kinds of fun. The pools were packed and campers enjoyed activities on the upper ball fields such as volleyball, basketball and arts and crafts. Russell Cohen, one of our Halutzim counselors, ran a baseball/softball clinic to help campers improve their skills.

Tonight we enjoyed pizza bagels and French fries for dinner. After dinner we had unit cheers in the dining hall! Each of our units had a chance to cheer in front of the entire camp. This is always one of the best times of the week because unit cheers are an age-old EKC tradition.

We ended the night with Shabbat concert and Havdallah in the amphitheater. There were so many talented acts with singing, dancing and skits! As we end our first full week, we can’t for the next one to begin. We are so excited for a great week ahead with lots of memories to be made.
