Tiyulim – Kineret Camping trip to Seneca Rock
By Pamela Nestor
Arriving at the Camp Site
We pulled up to the campsite just before sunset after a van ride of singing, giggling, and storytelling. The Kineret campers eagerly joined the counselors in pitching all the tents near the campfire. With everyone working together we had them finished in no time, so we got to cooking dinner! Ty grilled chicken while Jack split everyone into groups for the Olympics!
The three teams competed in javelin throwing (a pool noodle), archery (throwing the pool noodle through a moving hula hoop), and other activities for gold, silver, and bronze medals. When they were finished competing, we ate grilled chicken wraps with avocado, onions, lettuce, tomatoes, and then homemade chips for a snack later on.
We played games until it was dark and gathered around the fire for roasted marshmallows. There were so many fireflies they looked like twinkling stars against the dark forest. Campers ran around catching them until it was time for bed.
For breakfast we ate omelettes with red, yellow, and green peppers. After enjoying them by the fire, we took down the tents and packed up the campsite. As we were getting into the vans to drive to the trail, there was a double rainbow! It was the first of many incredible sites for the day.
Hiking at Seneca Rocks!
We headed to Seneca Rock for our hike! After passing out the Gatorades we hit the trail. We crossed two bridges and entered the forest, heading upwards to the overlook. Campers picked up rocks along the way they wanted keep, exchanging them as they found new favorites. On the ascent we stopped to hold a newt and Ty explained their metamorphosis.
One mile up and we made it to the overlook! We took a break to admire the view, take photos, and hydrate. As we were leaving, we stopped to talk to a group on horseback arriving at the overlook! We spotted a snake and a salamander on the way down! After a quick mile down, we made it to the vans and headed to lunch!
Spruce Knob, then Home
We ate sandwiches and drove to our next location: Spruce Knob, the highest point in West Virginia. At an elevation of 4,863 feet, the temperature was much cooler, so we layered up and walked to the overlook! The view at the top was incredible; You could see for miles! At that moment there was no one else in the state of West Virginia at a higher elevation!! We took pictures then walked back to the vans to drive back to EKC. It was a wonderful trip and a great way to celebrate the first day of summer!!
